In a plant, a power problem can stop a line, spoil a batch or damage a controller. A three-phase online UPS protects the critical loads, such as control systems, process equipment and data rooms, with clean power and no break when the supply fails.
It is a larger and more demanding installation than an office UPS, so planning matters.
Key takeaways
- A three-phase online UPS feeds three-phase critical loads with clean, steady power.
- The critical load is separated from the loads that can stop.
- Bypass and maintenance arrangements are part of the design.
- The room needs ventilation or cooling, space and protected cabling.
What it protects
Typical critical loads are PLC and control panels, drives that must not trip, instruments, data and network equipment and safety systems. Loads such as large motors that start across the line are usually left off the UPS, or handled by a different arrangement.
How the UPS is connected
The UPS has an input from the supply, an output to a critical-load board, a connection to the battery and a bypass. A maintenance bypass lets the UPS be isolated for service while the load stays on the supply. The input and output breakers and the cable sizes are chosen with the electrician.
- Input from the main supply, and from a generator where there is one.
- Output to the critical-load distribution board.
- Battery connection, see industrial UPS battery systems.
- Static and maintenance bypass.
Planning the room
The UPS room should be clean, cool and dry, with clear space in front of the cabinets for service. The UPS gives off heat, so ventilation or cooling is sized for it. The floor must carry the weight, and cables enter through trays or ducts.
Capacity and redundancy
How big the UPS is, and whether there is a spare, is a separate question that we cover in capacity and redundancy planning.
